Water testing, softeners and filtration for Saratoga County homes

Saratoga County is where we live and where Springhouse Water Club began. From Ballston Spa we reach every town in the county, from the Clifton Park and Halfmoon suburbs to the Adirondack foothills around Corinth and Hadley.

Water in Saratoga County

Saratoga County is literally named for its water. The mineral springs that made Saratoga Springs famous rise through a fault in the bedrock and carry dissolved minerals and natural carbonation to the surface; the same geology, carbonate rock under glacial sand and gravel, is why so many homes in the southern and central towns measure hard at the tap.

Municipal water reaches most of the suburbs. The City of Saratoga Springs draws from Loughberry Lake and supplements it with groundwater; the Saratoga County Water Authority treats Upper Hudson River water and wholesales it to several towns; villages such as Ballston Spa run their own systems. All of these are disinfected, so chlorine or chloramine taste and odor is a common reason households call us.

North and west of the Kayaderosseras valley the picture changes. Greenfield, Corinth, Hadley, Day, Edinburg, Providence and much of Galway and Charlton are on private wells. Well water there ranges from soft Adirondack-edge water with iron and a low pH to very hard water where the wells reach limestone. Two wells on the same road can test differently, which is why we never recommend from a map.

What we usually find in Saratoga County homes

  • Hardness and scale in the southern and central towns, on both municipal and well supplies.
  • Chlorine or chloramine taste and odor on municipal systems.
  • Iron and manganese staining, and occasionally low pH, on wells in the northern foothill towns.
  • Homeowners who want certified reduction of lead, PFOA/PFOS and other dissolved contaminants in the water they drink.

Your water is confirmed at your tap

These are patterns, not predictions. Two homes on the same road can test differently, and municipal water changes with the season and the source in use. The in-home assessment measures your water; for health-related questions on a private well we point you to a New York State ELAP-certified laboratory and your county health department.

How we work in Saratoga County

Our home base. Ballston Spa sits near the center of the county. The process is the same as everywhere we work: an in-home water test, a written recommendation that fits your results and your household, and installation by experienced local plumbers. There is no showroom and nothing to buy online; we come to you.

Treatment options for Saratoga County homes

Every recommendation follows the water test. These are the directions the test most often points to in Saratoga County.

Municipal water

Whole-house softening and filtration

Most municipal homes in Clifton Park, Malta, Wilton, Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa are candidates for a Puronics C-series combination system, which softens and reduces chlorine and chloramine in one tank.

Whole-house filtration Water softeners

Private wells

Lab test first, then treatment that fits

Foothill wells are tested by a certified laboratory first. Iron, manganese or low pH usually call for a different Puronics configuration ahead of, or instead of, a standard softener.

The Micromax 8500 reverse-osmosis system fits under the kitchen sink in any home, on any supply, for drinking and cooking water.

Saratoga County questions

Is Saratoga Springs city water hard?

It is treated and disinfected, and hardness varies with the blend of lake and well water in the system at any given time. We measure hardness at your tap during the in-home assessment rather than quote a city-wide number. Your annual water quality report, published by the city, lists what was detected at the plant.

I am in Clifton Park or Halfmoon on municipal water. Do I still need a water test?

Yes, because a system is sized to your measured hardness, your flow rate and the number of people in the home, not to the town. The visit also confirms where the water enters, where a drain is, and whether an outlet is nearby, which decides how the installation goes.

How soon can you visit a home in Saratoga County?
